Sunni factions underline strategic partnership with KDP in new Iraq government

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s Sunni factions represented under the National Front Coalition met with the president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the Kurdistan Region capital on Sunday to discuss the political situation in Iraq.

KDP President Masoud Barzani received a delegation from the National Front Coalition, headed by Khamis al-Khanjar, in Erbil to discuss and exchange views on the recent political developments in Iraq and the region, a statement from Barzani’s office read.

In a separate statement, the National Front said the visit was part of the Coalition’s efforts to converge views on the formation of the next Iraqi government.

“The Coalition affirms that the KDP is an effective and decisive party concerning the building of a state that all Iraqis wish for,” the statement said.

It added that the KDP’s participation in the new government is essential for Prime Minister-designate Adel Abdul Mahdi to begin implementing the reform package.

The National Coalition also reaffirmed that their strategic partnership with the KDP would correct the approaches and mechanisms that have been previously used to rule the country.

During a meeting in late August, both sides agreed that the new Iraqi government’s plans and programs would be the main criteria to determine whether or not the Sunni Coalition and the Kurdish leadership decide to join and support the largest parliamentary bloc.

Both sides also stressed the need to implement and consider the principles that best serve the partnership between all components in the next administration.
