ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Thousands of chicks late Thursday night ran amok on the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani – Kalar main road, as authorities have yet to explain what happened.

Kurdistan 24’s correspondent in Kalar, Harem Jaff, was at the scene and reported it was unclear under what circumstances these chicks came to cover the road.

“As of yet, nobody knows why these chicks are here, whether a truck transporting them got into an accident, or if they were intentionally discarded for being ill or having an viral infection,” Jaff reported.

A video published on local social media networks showed people and drivers passing through trying to rescue the chicks from getting run over on the main road.

“There are so many of them, and cars driving by have accidentally run over some of them,” says the person who filmed the disoriented chicks as others attempt to rescue them.

“We just pulled over the car and tried to rescue them, but we don’t know what to do as they are so many. We don't know who did this to these chicks,” added the person behind the camera.

Garmiyan police spokesperson, Ali Jamal Qaduri, on Friday morning told Kurdistan 24 that they were investigating the incident, which he estimated the number of chicks to be about “10,000.”

“We have also taken some of the chicks to a laboratory to test their health, see whether they are infected with any virus,” Qaduri said.

A local source suspected that the birds had been brought from neighboring Iran and were discarded after local factories refused them over suspicions they were ill, but local authorities are yet to confirm.
