ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Masoud Barzani on Tuesday discussed bilateral ties with senior Kuwaiti officials before his return to the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani, who is the former President of the Kurdistan Region, led a Kurdish delegation to Kuwait accompanied by Masrour Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC).

He met with Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah on Tuesday to speak about the latest political developments in Iraq and the region. The two highlighted the ties between the Kurdistan Region and Kuwait as well as the means to develop relations, according to Barzani’s press office.

The political process in Iraq and the formation of the new Iraqi federal government were other topics of discussion in the meeting.

Barzani also separately met with Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah to discuss the latest situation in Iraq.

The Kurdish leader also visited Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad Cultural Center (JACC), and later met with other Kuwaiti officials in the economy and financial sectors.

Barzan’s visit came after he met with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, in UAE on Sunday.

Later, on Tuesday evening, Barzani along with his delegation returned to the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil.

Although Barzani has held no governmental post since his term as the president of the semi-autonomous region ended on Nov. 1, 2017, in the wake of Baghdad’s stern reaction to the independence referendum, he continues to play a central and influential role in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole.
