Turkish jets carry out bombardment in Shingal, Makhmour district

Turkey often carries out airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region’s mountainous areas against alleged PKK positions.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Turkey’s Ministry of Defense on Thursday said its warplanes targeted Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in the Kurdistan Region.

Sources in the Mount Qarachokh area near the disputed Makhmour district said the bombardment happened at around 9:30 p.m. local time.

Other sources in Shingal, meanwhile, said Turkish jets struck the villages of Shlu and Tal Ozeir.

There were no details of any casualties.

On Friday, the Turkish military said in a Twitter post that eight PKK members had been "neutralized," a term Turkish authorities often use in statements to refer to enemy fighters killed, captured, or incapacitated.

PKK-affiliated media outlet ANF reported that the attack resulted in the deaths of four civilians living in a nearby camp for displaced persons in Makhmour.

Turkey often carries out airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region’s border against alleged PKK positions.

In two occasions in October, Ankara said it killed over a dozen PKK fighters in mountainous areas of the semi-autonomous region.

As part of the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the Kurdish fighters, the Turkish army has its southern border several times in the past year, in some places up to 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) deep into the Kurdistan Region.

These attacks, however, often cause injuries and deaths to residents unaffiliated with the group, and have forced villagers from the areas to flee for their lives.

In late August, Turkish shelling injured a Kurdish civilian and killed over 10 cows in a village in Sidekan district, Erbil province.

In March, Turkish jets struck and killed four people who were celebrating Newroz, the Kurdish new year, in Erbil’s Choman district.
