ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday visited Kuwait to extend his condolences on the death of Kuwait’s former emir and to discuss bilateral relations between the gulf country and the autonomous Kurdish region, according to a statement.

The Kurdistan Region’s President on Tuesday landed in Kuwait’s capital city along with his delegation as they were received by Kuwait’s Minister for Royal Court Affairs Sheikh Ali al-Jarah al-Sabah. The aim of the visits, according to a statement from the regional presidency, was to extend condolences on the passing of former Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed, who recently died in Washington.

Discussing the bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and Kuwait were discussed in a meeting between President Barzani and the newly appointed Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, according to the statement.

Kuwait maintains a consulate general in the Kurdistan Region’s capital of Erbil since 2015.

“President Barzani thanked the role and activities of Kuwait’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region,” the statement noted, as he extended his appreciation toward Kuwait’s humanitarian aid, particularly for the Syrian and Iraqi internally displaced persons (IDPs).

For his part, the Kuwaiti Emir expressed his delight at President Barzani’s visit and sympathy with Kuwait, per the statement.

Sheikh Sabah, who led Kuwait since 2006, was 91 when his passing was announced by the national cabinet. The body then announced that Sheikh Sabah’s 83-year-old brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf-al Sabah, would be the new head of state.

The Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani previously extended his condolences on the passing of late Emir Sheikh Sabah following the announcement of his death.

Sheikh Sabah had “a strong, friendly relationship with the Kurdistan Region,” Prime Minister Barzani said.
