Kuwait Airways suspends flights to Iraq after Baghdad airport rocket attack

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kuwait Airways announced on Saturday it was suspending flights to Iraq as rocket attacks continue to target Baghdad International Airport.

On Friday, six rockets were fired at the massive Baghdad airport, damaging an “out-of-service” Iraqi Airways plane there. The attack did not disrupt flights, and there were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Kuwait Airways said on its official Twitter account that the decision came based on the Administration of Kuwaiti Civil Aviation instructions, "in view of the current conditions in the Iraqi Republic."

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Friday expressed concern about the current wave of attacks targeting political party offices, residences, and businesses in Iraq. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani strongly condemned the assault.

The attack was the latest in a series of incidents in Baghdad, many against the capital city’s heavily fortified Green Zone, where the US embassy and many important government buildings are located.
