German CG praises Peshmerga during visit to Garmiyan administration

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The German Consul General to Erbil Klemens Semtner visited the Kalar district’s Garmiyan Administration on Monday to exchange views over the economic and security situation there with the head of the administration. 

“I appreciate the warm welcoming I received from the Garmiyan administration and its people,” Semtner told a press conference in the Kalar district. “We support the activities of the German-Kurdish Organization, based in Garmiyan area, including the organization’s activities in supporting the youth, gender equality, environment, and commemorating the Anfal campaign.”

Semtner thanked the Peshmerga and the other local security forces in the Garmiyan administration for protecting people there and keeping the area safe. 

“I discussed with Garmiyan authorities the means of developing economy in the area and the challenges that could face this development because of the climate change, particularly its impact on the water resources,” Semtner said. “I expressed my readiness for cooperation and consulting to overcome these challenges.”

“In cooperation with the US, UK, and the Netherlands, Germany has supported Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Ministry and the reforms the ministry has been making,” he said. “When we talk about supporting Peshmerga, we are not only talking about providing weapons; we have also provided training and helped with building a hospital for Peshmerga.” 

“We are also ready to provide strategic advisory to Peshmerga.” 

Jalal Nouri, head of the Garmiyan administration, welcomed Semtner to the administration. 

He called on the German Consulate General to facilitate German companies investing in the area’s agricultural, electricity, and tourism sectors. 

“I appreciate the cooperation of the coalition forces with the security forces in the Garmiyan administration area that helped deter ISIS attacks in the area,” he said. 

“With coalition’s help, the threat of ISIS was removed from the area, particularly in Kifri district.”
