ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Erbil’s Municipality Presidency and Hemn Group will sign a contract “in the coming days” for construction of the third phase of Erbil’s 150-meter ring road, that will connect Erbil-Bahrka intersection with the Erbil-Gopall Road in Duhok province, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Municipality and Tourism announced on Sunday.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani decreed this new phase of the project’s construction, the ministry added.

The second phase of the road’s construction began in early September 2021. It is still ongoing and expected to be inaugurated soon, Nizar Tamar, the general director of planning in the ministry, told Kurdistan 24 on Monday.

According to Tamar, the third part would require nearly $110 million, which will be made available as a loan from the construction company that will be repaid once the road is inaugurated.

The six-kilometer road will be finished in less than 18 months, he added.

Construction on the first phase of the giant road began in late 2018 and has taken more than three years to finish.

The road will cover 70 kilometers around the Kurdish capital and help ease traffic congestion.
