ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s health authorities received more than 80 tons of medical supplies from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday.

Kurdistan Region Health Minister Saman Barzinji and the WHO representative to Iraq, Dr. Ahmed Zouiten, announced the delivery.

The 85-ton batch consists of 30 items, including painkillers, antibiotics, saline water, and first aid kits, Barzinji said.

The batch is worth $500,000, he added.

Over the past two years, the WHO contributed $6 million worth of assistance to the Kurdistan Region and provided consultations during the COVID-19 pandemic, Barzinji added.

On Tuesday, the health ministry held a conference, attended by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and WHO representatives, to assess the strengths and weakness of the Kurdistan Region’s health sector in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The international organization recently held a similar conference with the Iraqi health ministry.

During the early days of the pandemic, the WHO delivered batches of face masks and medical gowns to the Kurdistan Region for first responders.

According to public health figures, the highly contagious virus has infected at least 434,000 people since the pandemic began in early 2020. Over 7,300 also died.
