ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Abdul Wahab Mohammed, director of border security (Asayish) in Zakho district, announced the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of narcotics smuggled from Syria through Sinjar (Shingal) district.

The narcotics were hidden inside ten trucks from Syria that passed through the Sinjar district into the Kurdistan Region, Mohammed told a press conference in Zakho.

At least 105 kilograms of drugs were seized, he added.

He also noted that similar shipments were seized in several warehouses on the Gwer-Erbil road.

Eight suspects, including foreigners accused of importing these materials, were arrested.

Mohammed stressed that investigations are still ongoing.

The sale and consumption of any non-prescription narcotics are strictly forbidden in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Kurdish and Iraqi authorities often intercept shipments of drugs passing through Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, mainly in the provinces of Basra, Diyala, Erbil, and Sulaimani.
