ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday received the newly inaugurated French envoy to Erbil and congratulated him on the new position, according to a statement.

Barzani received French Consul General Yann Braem and his accompanying delegation in Erbil, where they discussed bilateral relations.

The new diplomat in Erbil said that the Kurdistan Region is “special and important” to the French president and people, according to a statement from Barzani’s office. He also expressed his country’s willingness to develop ties with the Kurdistan Region in various sectors.

The two officials also discussed the latest developments in the region.

Since 2007, Mr. Braem has served his country in various diplomatic capacities, including stints in Egypt and Pakistan. Prior to his career in diplomacy, he served as a consultant to the French Armed Forces for five years.

Erbil and Paris share close economic, cultural, and political ties. The two capitals are sister cities.

As an integral part of the US-led coalition against ISIS, France has provided the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces with training as well as air support in the Kurdish forces’ fight against the terror group between 2014 and 2017.

Earlier in July, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu visited the Kurdistan Region and met with Kurdish leadership, stressing cooperation on the lingering threat of ISIS.
