Two people drowned in Erbil’s Sheikhi Balakan River

The spokesperson noted that the body of the father, Soran Mulla Nabi, 27, was found and sent to the Soran Forensic Medical Examination.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Rawand Maghdid, the spokesperson for the Soran Civil Defense, informed Kurdistan24 that a father and his son tragically drowned in the Sheikhi Balakan River. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Choman district, near the Galala subdistrict in Erbil province.

The spokesperson noted that the body of the father, Soran Mulla Nabi, 27, was found and sent to the Soran Forensic Medical Examination.

"Teams are also currently searching for the body of the child, as it has not yet been located," Maghdid said.

He also added that this is the first case of a tourist drowning in Choman this year.

On Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani's recommendation, a meeting about National Drowning Prevention Day was held at the Ministry of Interior on July 25, 2023. During the meeting, the ministry discussed the importance of developing lifeguard training protocols and a potential requirement in the future to have all water attractions supervised by certified lifeguards.

Globally, according to the World Health Organization, more than 2.6 million people have drowned in the past 10 years. According to the organization, young people and children are the most vulnerable to drowning, with more than half of those dying being under the age of 30.
