Election Commission opens nominations for 2024 Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections

The nomination period will run from June 8 until the end of official working hours on June 13, 2024.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Election Commission announced the opening of nominations for coalitions, parties, individual candidates, and individual candidates for components wishing to participate in the 2024 parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The nomination period will run from June 8 until the end of official working hours on June 13, 2024.

The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission, approved the decision to distribute Kurdistan Parliament seats across four electoral regions.

According to a document published by the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 3, the Kurdistan Region is divided into four electoral districts: Erbil, Dohuk, Sulaymaniyah, and Halabja.

The Board of Commissioners outlined the distribution of the 100 Kurdistan Parliament seats as follows:

  • Erbil: 34 seats, including one seat for the Christian component and one seat for the Turkmen component
  • Sulaymaniyah: 38 seats, including one seat for the Christian component and one seat for the Turkmen component
  • Dohuk: 25 seats, including one seat for the Christian component
  • Halabja: 3 seats, without any seats for components

The decision specifies that nominations for quota seats allocated for Christians and Turkmen must be made individually within the respective electoral district. The candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be declared the winner. Voting for these candidates will be conducted by voters within the same electoral district.
