ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani on Sunday discussed bilateral ties with France’s Ambassador to Iraq Patrick Durel, according to a statement from Barzani Headquarters.

The meeting focused on discussing the political and security situation in Iraq and the broader Middle East. Additionally, the challenges to regional stability were addressed.

The meeting also emphasized the friendly relations between the Kurdistan Region and France and stressed the importance of maintaining and enhancing these friendly relations between the two sides.

KDP President Barzani also expressed gratitude towards France, emphasizing that the Kurdish people will always remember the kind and constructive role played by the French people and government, who have consistently shown sympathy and support during challenging times. One notable instance was their attempt, in 1991, to pass Security Council Resolution 688, aiming to establish a haven and safeguard the well-being of the Kurdish population.

At the end of the meeting, both sides addressed the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to take place this year. The importance of ensuring that elections are free and fair was emphasized.

Erbil and Paris share close economic, cultural, and political ties. The two capitals are sister cities.

As an integral part of the US-led coalition against ISIS, France has provided the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces with training as well as air support in the Kurdish forces’ fight against the terror group between 2014 and 2017.
