The world has become aware of Peshmerga’s successes and further impressed by such victories during a difficult financial crisis, said a top UN official on Saturday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The world has become aware of Peshmerga’s successes and further impressed by such victories during a difficult financial crisis, said a top UN official on Saturday.

President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his accompanied delegates, including the President of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim, President of the Islamic Development Bank Ahmad Mohamad Ali al-Madani, and the special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Jan Kubis among other advisers and diplomats.

In the meeting, the President discussed the fight against the Islamic State (IS), the Kurdistan Region’s critical financial crisis, and the sheltering of almost two million refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

He mentioned that the Region has not received any economic aid to spend on refugees and IDPs which has left a substantial load on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). President Barzani noted that the international community should consider that the IS war and IDPs’ burden mostly lays on the Kurdistan Region and, as a result, they need substantial assistance.

During the meeting, President Barzani touched upon the KRG reform plan and emphasized that the government will abide by the international principles when making changes. He asked the international community to help and guide the Region in proceeding the reform successfully.

KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani also attended the meeting along with Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Chancellor Masrour Barzani, among other Kurdish officials.

In another part of the meeting, Ban Ki-moon congratulated President Barzani and the people of Kurdistan on Newroz Eve. He also praised the role of the President and Peshmerga in the fight against IS. He noted that the name of Peshmerga, who defend the entire world in the closest frontline, is well-known around the globe, according to the Kurdistan Region Presidency Press Office.

Furthermore, Ban Ki-moon stated that the world is aware of Peshmerga successes and impressed by such victories that have been achieved during a difficult financial crisis. He emphasized the support of the UN for President Barzani and the Kurdistan Region in promoting stability and peace.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim expressed his support for the Kurdistan Region in making reforms and acknowledged that the KRG deserves the support of the international community.

Additionally, Islamic Development Bank President Madani stated that he accompanied the World Bank representative to show their support for the Region’s reform plan, aiding refugees and IDPs and helping them return to their liberated territories.
