Over 200 Kurdish female officers graduate military academy

Over 200 female officers graduated from Zakho Military Academy with President Masoud Barzani praising the role of Kurdish women in the fight against extremists.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Wednesday, over 200 female officers graduated from Zakho Military Academy. President Masoud Barzani praised the role of Kurdish women in the fight against extremists.

In a ceremony held in Zakho, 201 women graduated and showed their readiness to fight for and defend the Kurdistan Region. Many top officials attended the ceremony, including Kurdistan Region President Barzani, Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Chancellor Masrour Barzani, Peshmerga commanders, military and foreign diplomats.

President Barzani congratulated the graduates of the Zakho Military Academy and expressed his confidence regarding the ability of the Peshmerga female fighters.

“I am very hopeful that you will [all] fill a [security] gap [in the Kurdistan Region] and achieve significant victories hand in hand with your brothers [Peshmerga currently fighting Islamic State (IS)],” Barzani said.

He praised the historical heroes of Zakho and mentioned the city as “the nest of revolutions and revolutionary people.” Barzani continued, “I think we made a very sound decision when we established the Military Academy in Zakho in 1996.”

Furthermore, he added that when Kurdistan is under the threat of attacks by IS, all the people of Kurdistan, including old and young, boys and girls are ready to defend the homeland.

“In the fight against IS, our sons and daughters [Peshmerga] proved to the world that they are heroes,” Barzani stated, adding that Kurdish men and women demonstrated that Kurdistan is a red line for enemies and cannot be crossed.  

“We showed the world that Peshmerga are ready to sacrifice their lives to protect Kurdistan. And, that there is no difference between male and female Peshmerga [in combating IS],” Barzani announced.

Additionally, he noted that it is an honor for Kurds that Peshmerga have become the symbol of resistance in destroying the myth of IS.

“I am confident that you will all be successful,” Barzani turned to the graduates and noted that they have been entrusted to protect and serve Kurdistan from enemies.
