Sadr calls for mass demonstration on Tuesday

On Sunday, Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called on people to hold a mass demonstration on Tuesday, April 26, in Baghdad.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called on people to hold a mass demonstration on Tuesday, April 26, in Baghdad.

Sadr released a statement calling his supporters in Baghdad to delay their protest from Monday to Tuesday instead.

He also urged the demonstrators to keep the protest peaceful. Sadr asked that efforts be made to support reforms in Iraq as well as pushing the government and Iraqi parliament to form a technocratic cabinet.

“We will continue to demonstrate until a reformed and technocrat government is announced who can serve the people of Iraq,” a senior aide of Sadr, Ibrahim al-Jabri, told Kurdistan24.

Additionally, Jabri mentioned that demonstration is the right of all the people in Iraq as it is explained in the Constitution. “We will put our efforts in expressing our complaints and concerns in the center of Baghdad,” he added.

Jabri also stated that Iraqi people are expressing their concerns and called on the Federal Government of Iraq to review its duties and the demands of people.

“We are against sectarian conflict. We call on an impartial and technocrat government to serve the country,” he stated, claiming the current government monopolies authority in the country.

Previously, Sadr arranged several demonstrations in Baghdad, pressing the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi to form a technocrat government and combat corruption.

Abadi revealed the nominees of the new technocrat government of Iraq, but the parliament members of Iraq refused to accept them, and tensions have flared since.
