Russia: Foreign interference created chaos in Iraq

Foreign interference in Iraq without considering the specificity of the country was irrational and caused trouble in the country, said a Russian official on Thursday.

MOSCOW, Russia (Kurdistan24) – Foreign interference in Iraq without considering the specificity of the country was irrational and caused trouble in the country, said a Russian official on Thursday.

In a press conference that was held in Moscow, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, responded to Kurdistan24 question about the current situation in Iraq.

“Russia’s stance on Iraq is on the international level, and it focuses on two main points,” Zakharova said. “First, the roots of the current long-term problems should be considered and solved from its base.”

She stated that the foreign intervention in the country to build a particular type of government without considering the specific nature of the country will not be successful.

About the second point, she noted that Russia is in contact with Iraqi officials in aspects of diplomacy, military technics, and economy and so on to address the current situation in the country.

She stated that it is in the interest of Russia to have a stable, developed and independent Iraq, far from foreign interference.

“We hope Iraq will become a country that will be able to keep balance in internal affairs. We are cooperating with the Federal Government of Iraq in the fight against terrorists [Islamic State],” she stated.

Currently, Iraq is suffering from an economic crisis as well as a political turmoil. Troubles come at a time that the country is fighting jihadists.
