Kurdistan Region Security forces foil IS suicide attack

The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) foiled an attempted suicide attack on a crowded market in the Kurdistan Region on Monday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) foiled an attempted suicide attack on a crowded market in the Kurdistan Region on Monday.

The KRSC reported that in a joint operation with the Intelligence Agency Forces and Duhok Security Forces they arrested an Islamic State (IS) suicide bomber.

The security forces also confiscated a suicide vest and several explosives.

According to a KRSC statement, the arrested IS extremist is Adnan Muhammed Sadiq, known as Abu Fatima, from the city of Talaafar.

Sadiq had breached Peshmerga front lines but he was arrested before the suicide attack.

The KRSC added that the capture took place in the Khrmr village of the Ayaziya sub-district in Talaafar on Monday at 7:30 a.m.

“Based on the terrorist’s confession, he was assigned by [IS’] to commit a suicide attack on the last day of Ramadan in a market,” the report concluded.

The statement did not provide the targeted location.

During the operation, besides confiscating the terrorist’s suicide vest, a cache of weapons was found used by the terrorists in the targeted areas. The KRSC revealed there were a large amount of different types of explosives and arms.

This is the second successful operation by the Kurdish Security forces in the past week.

On June 28, the KRSC announced the death of two senior IS leaders inside Mosul.

A coalition airstrike relying on intelligence provided by the KRSC Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) killed Bsam Sina, Head of IS military in Mosul.

According to the KRSC, Hatm Al-Hmdoni, Head of IS Finances in Mosul, was also killed in an airstrike on June 6, in western Mosul.
