Death toll of Qamishlo twin attacks rises to 50

On Wednesday two explosions hit al-Gharby neighborhood in the Kurdish city of Qamishlo in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), killing and wounding dozens of people.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Wednesday two explosions hit al-Gharby neighborhood in the Kurdish city of Qamishlo in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), killing and wounding dozens of people. 

A truck exploded at Rojava Administration building in al-Gharby neighborhood at 9:30 in the morning. The explosion was followed by a suicide attack at the same location.

According to the Kurdish Red Crescent in Rojava 50 people lost their lives and 177 others were wounded due to the twin attacks.

Islamic State (IS) claimed the responsibility for the explosions in a statement published on the group's social media channels a few hours after the attack.

Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani in a statement on KRP website condemned the terror attack on Qamishlo and instructed the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) institutions and especially Duhok governorate to be ready to receive the wounded and provide assistance.

The KRG PM Nechirvan Barzani also condemned the attacks and expressed KRG’s readiness to help Rojava. “KRG is ready with all its capacity to help the victims and wounded of the terror attack,” Barzani said in a statement.

Masrour Barzani, chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) on his Twitter account condemned the "horrific attacks in Qamishlo."

"If all Kurdish sides could take part in Rojava they wouldd be in a stronger position to fight terrorism, defend our people and safeguard gains," Barzani added.

Director of Health in Duhok told a Kurdistan24 reporter at the border of Kurdistan Region and Rojava that three tons of medical aid have been dispatched to Rojava as hospitals are in dire need for medicine.

“New convoy of medical supplies is on the way from Zakho to Peshabur border toward Rojava,” the KRG official said.

Fathullah Husseini, Representative of Rojava Administration in Kurdistan Region in an interview with Kurdistan24 thanked the KRG for sending medical assistance to Rojava.
