ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Three women were killed late Tuesday night, and a child is under intensive medical care after a teenage driver lost control of his father’s car which police said he was driving without a license in Soran, a city in the Kurdistan Region's Erbil province.

The victims killed in the accident were a woman and her two daughters while her granddaughter is receiving care at an Emergency Room at an Erbil hospital.

The accident occurred during the evening when the family was taking a walk after Iftar (the breaking of fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan) and planning to shop at local stores.

After hitting the victims, the teenage driver slammed into two cars resulting in substantial damages to the vehicles, but no more casualties, police said.

“The driver was born in 2002,” Major Awar Argushi, spokesperson for the Soran Traffic Police, told Kurdistan 24, adding that “the driver was promptly arrested by police” following the police’s arrival at the scene.

Argushi said the case is currently under investigation according to Article 24 of the Traffic Law.

He revealed that the teenager, identified as Alan Sabah Kareem, was driving the car without the knowledge of his parents.

Kareem wanted to get home before his father, so he began to speed, resulting in the accident, Argushi said.
