ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources on Sunday announced the government has pledged more than 13 billion Iraqi dinars to complete the construction of multiple dams across the region.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani approved the request for funding made on July 12 amid the agriculture ministry's "continued efforts to combat droughts," said Begard Talabani, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources.

The statement explained that the prime minister ordered the “disbursing of 13,040,000,000 Iraqi dinars to complete dam-building projects in the Kurdistan Region.”

Analysts have long called on successive governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to implement policies that raise awareness of water issues and incentivize the public to ration its usage.

Experts have also suggested the regional government in Erbil, along with the federal government in Baghdad, must work together to reach a consensus with neighboring countries, namely Turkey and Iran, on an equitable way of sharing water from the Tigris and Euphrates basins.
