ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday discussed the robust role of the Kurdish diaspora in Kazakhstan with the Central Asian country’s envoy to Iraq and Jordan.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received Kazakhstan Ambassador to Iraq and Jordan Aidarbek Toumatov and his accompanying delegation in Erbil.

Barzani and Toumatov discussed enhancing bilateral ties in investment and trade fields, highlighting the “active and robust Kurdish diaspora role” in the Central Asian country, a statement from the premier’s office read.

The ambassador expressed his delight regarding the “development and reconstruction” the Kurdistan Region has witnessed, the press release added.

The premier met with Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the sidelines of COP28 – the United Nations annual climate summit held this year in the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai – in early December.

More than 38,300 Kurds live in Kazakhstan, constituting 0.2 percent of the population, per a 2009 census in the country. However, the Kurds in the country believe the figure is higher than the official statistic.

The majority of Kurds in Kazakhstan are descendants of tens of thousands of Soviet Union authority exiles from Caucasian countries to Central Asia.

In August this year, the Kazakh Kurds Organization commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Barzanis Genocide.
