ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Dilshad Shahab, Kurdistan Region Presidency spokesperson, announced in a presser on Sunday that negotiations regarding parliamentary elections continue.
The press conference occurred after Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani had met with top Iraqi officials.
In addition to the Kurdistan Region's financial entitlements as well as the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, the spokesperson highlighted security concerns and threats to the Kurdistan Region, particularly the Khor Mor gas field attack, which caused significant economic damage to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
"On all issues, there is a good and common understanding, and in every meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the content of the agreements to form the Sudani’s cabinet and enforce the constitution," Shahab stated.
Regarding the MyAccount project, he said that Baghdad's position is clear and they have a good understanding with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in this regard and the aim of the negotiations is to ensure the salaries of the Kurdistan Region civil servants.
Also, concerning the Kurdistan Region parliamentary election, the official revealed that all Iraqi political parties are paying attention to this issue and the vision of the KRG is to hold elections in which all parties, including the communities of the Kurdistan Region, participate.
Every four years, Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections are held to elect the 111 members. The election was first held in 1992 and the most recent election was held in 2018.
On March 28, Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) revealed that 3,789,360 people are eligible to vote in the Kurdistan Region and that 2,783,552 have renewed their voter registration cards, which is more than one million voters, 26% of the total number of voters.
