KRG Begins Wheat Collection from Farmers for 2024

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Trade and Industry has commenced the process of receiving wheat from farmers across all silos in the Kurdistan Region.
Sarwar Hawari, the representative of the ministry, announced this year's wheat collection plan during a press conference held at the Erbil silo on June 6, 2024.
Hawari revealed that 700,000 tons of wheat will be collected from farmers this year, with the process set to continue for 45 days. He explained that the price for a ton of wheat is set at 850,000 dinars, and farmers will receive immediate payment upon delivery.
Breaking down the collection figures, Hawari noted that 228,000 tons of wheat will be collected from farmers in Erbil, 282,000 tons in Sulaimani and Halabja, and 189,000 tons in Duhok.
The Kurdistan Region has 11 operational silos, with plans for additional silos in Halabja and Zakho. The region has the capacity to store 1 million tons of wheat annually.
The Kurdistan Region also boasts 39 mills, with 15 in Erbil, 13 in Duhok, and 11 in Sulaimani, which produce flour for monthly food rations.
In previous years, the Kurdistan Region's wheat collection has varied, with 390,000 tons in 2020, 375,000 tons in 2021, 125,000 tons in 2022, and 500,000 tons in 2023 received by the Iraqi government.
