ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a significant move to address water resource challenges and climate change impacts, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced the construction of Binaslawa Pond in Erbil’s Binaslawa district. With a capacity of three million cubic meters, this pond will be one of the largest in the Kurdistan Region.

The project, valued at four billion dinars, will see the creation of a 360-meter-long pond capable of collecting rainwater and spring water. Standing at a height of 17 meters, Binaslawa Pond is set for completion within a year.

This initiative is part of the KRG ninth cabinet's broader strategy to safeguard the region's water resources. Since its inauguration, the cabinet has focused on mitigating the effects of climate change by approving the construction of 41 ponds in three phases, with a total investment exceeding 27 billion dinars.

The first phase saw the completion of 20 ponds, while the second phase approved 14 more. The third phase includes the construction of four additional ponds, with plans for 23 more. In addition to new constructions, the ninth cabinet has allocated 1.6 billion dinars for pond renovations and more than 243 billion dinars for dam projects.

These ponds, located primarily in villages, aim to protect water resources and support agriculture and tourism. According to the General Directorate of Water Resources, over 20 dams and ponds are nearing completion, collectively capable of holding 87 million cubic meters of water.
