ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Ministries of Agriculture and Municipalities of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) are working together to return lands that were turned into forced labor camps under Decrees 810 and 532 of the former Iraqi regime in 1987.

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources announced that a special meeting was held with the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism to coordinate efforts and resolve mutual issues.

The joint committee discussed the mechanism for protecting and returning agricultural lands that were previously designated as forced labor camps by the former regime.

The committee aims to develop a clear process to return these lands to the Ministry of Agriculture, making them available for farmers under existing contracts.

The meeting also addressed the implementation of the Council of Ministers' decision to distribute land to employees. The Ministries agreed to identify lands unsuitable for agriculture, focusing on rocky areas within urban master plans.

Both sides decided to prepare a proposal for the Prime Minister's Office to cancel the former regime's decrees and extinguish the designation of these lands as forced labor camps, facilitating their return to agricultural use.
