Foreign workforce on rise in Iraq

It’s believed there are more than one million foreign labors who work in Iraq, most of them work without the legal work permit, in addition to no record of how they entered the country, no formal entry clearance, not known from what background or precheck about their personal records.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Increasing of foreign labor in Iraq raised tremendous concerns from different aspects. Many socio-economic experts warned of an economic and security spells beside more complicated issues including labor, health, security…etc. crisis will probably be experienced by the Iraqi state and its people.  

The statistics by the ministry of labor and social welfare and activists of socio-economic confirm that illegal foreign labor is on a continuous rise, updated data has been disclosed by the ministry of labor and social welfare regarding the matter. They have revealed the numbers of foreigners who work without work permit in Iraq are higher than before and worryingly increase.

The Economist Nasser Kinani said “A large number of foreign workers entered Iraq, majority of them work illegally in Iraq. It’s limited the job opportunities for Iraqi younger generation and left the Iraqi labor-hand unemployed,”

“The danger is not only they have left no job opportunities for Iraqis, but a security risk will follow” Kinani said “majority of them work illegally and they are without the work permits. Horrifyingly, in flux head to Iraq, seeking jobs”  

According to some sources in south and middle of Iraq, Foreign workers have dominated the domestic market in a unorganized and unsupervised way.

Previously, on July 26th , Pakistani Minister of Religious Affairs Chaudhry Salik Hussain disclosed that 50,000 pilgrims who had visited Iraq to attend the Ashura ceremony have gone missing. It was later revealed that Pakistanis arrived in Iraq and started to work.

Although Iraqi Minister of Labor Ahmed al-Asadi confirmed to take the matter into consideration, but further information has been released about Pakistani’s Minister of Religious Affair’s claim of  50,000 missing Pakistanis in Iraq.
