KRG's Ninth Cabinet builds six new dams, plans 11 more to ensure water security

Despite facing significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, falling oil prices, and delays in receiving the budget, the ninth cabinet has remained committed to its strategic vision.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has successfully completed the construction of six new dams as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance water security in the region.

An additional 11 dams are planned for construction.

Despite facing significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, falling oil prices, and delays in receiving the budget, the ninth cabinet has remained committed to its strategic vision.

This vision includes the implementation of essential infrastructure projects to secure water resources for the Kurdistan Region.

Currently, there are 34 large, medium, and small dams in the Kurdistan Region. Of these, 23 have been completed, with 11 more expected to be finished in the near future. Notably, the ninth cabinet has completed the construction of six dams: Chamrga, Khans, Dewana, Turrajar, Aquban, and Shawger.

In addition to these, the Gomespan and Bastora dams, which were also completed under the ninth cabinet, have the capacity to absorb over 150 million cubic meters of water.

These dams play a crucial role in safeguarding groundwater, boosting the tourism sector, supporting agricultural and livestock activities, rebuilding villages, and providing clean water to residents.
