ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Friday extended a congratulatory message to Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), marking the party's 78th anniversary.

In his message, Prime Minister Sudani acknowledged the KDP’s significant role in Iraq's political landscape, highlighting the party's historical struggle against the former dictatorial regimes in Iraq. He praised the KDP's contributions, alongside other Iraqi political forces, to laying the foundations for a just, equal, and democratic system in the country.

The KDP, founded on August 16, 1946, in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) by Mullah Mustafa Barzani, has been instrumental in the Kurdish struggle for autonomy. Mullah Mustafa Barzani, a key figure in the party’s history, led the Kurdish September Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, challenging the oppressive policies of the then-Iraqi government.

The anniversary coincides with the birthday of the party’s current leader, Masoud Barzani, who served as President of the Kurdistan Region from 2005 to 2017. Barzani remains a pivotal figure in Kurdish politics, having led the 2017 Kurdish independence referendum, where over 90 percent of voters in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) expressed their support for independence.
