ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Alain Delon, the legendary French actor renowned for his magnetic screen presence and enigmatic persona, has passed away at the age of 88.

The star of the golden era of French cinema died peacefully at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family, according to a statement released to AFP by his family, who requested privacy during this time of mourning.

Delon, whose rugged good looks and intense performances made him one of the most celebrated figures in European cinema, starred in over 90 films throughout his illustrious career.

His portrayal of complex, often brooding characters in classics such as Le Samouraï and Rocco and His Brothers cemented his status as a cinematic icon.

Born on November 8, 1935, in Sceaux, Hauts-de-Seine, France, Delon’s path to stardom was far from straightforward.

After an unsettled childhood and a brief stint in the French Navy, Delon found his way into acting almost by chance.

His first significant role in Yves Allégret's Quand la femme s’en mêle in 1957 marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would see him collaborate with some of the greatest directors in European cinema, including Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Jean-Pierre Melville.

Delon's career reached new heights in the 1960s with starring roles in The Leopard and L’Eclisse, films that are now regarded as masterpieces of world cinema.

Despite his success in Europe and Japan, Delon's attempts to break into Hollywood were less fruitful, although he remained a beloved figure in France and beyond.

In later years, Delon became a reclusive figure, plagued by health issues. However, his legacy in the film industry remained undeniable.

He was honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Palme d’Honneur at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, despite controversies surrounding his outspoken views and alleged connections to the criminal underworld.

Alain Delon’s impact on cinema, with his captivating performances and the unmistakable allure of his "angel-faced" looks, will be remembered for generations to come.

He leaves behind a rich legacy in film, a testament to his enduring influence on the world of cinema.
