Environmental annual ceremony in Mariwan

In that anniversary, all the environmental activists from Mariwan and other cities of east Kurdistan, laid flowers on the tombs of environmental activists, furthermore, to work to protect Kurdistan’s environment.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Upon an initiative from the Green Body of Mariwan Mountain and with attendance of a large number of Mariwan, Urmia Environmentalists, Sina and Kermanshah provinces’ residents in the eastern part of Kurdistan (Rojhalat), the anniversary of the environmental activists who lost their lives, celebrated on August 25th, 2024 in Mariwan.

Six years ago, during extinguishing a fire that broke out into the forests in Mariwan, Sharif Bajwar and Umed Kunaposhi, a two environmental activists and key members of the Green Body of Mount Mariwan, tragically died.

“Overall, the ceremony was extensive and consisted the whole. It was a message to reach out the ears of environment’s enemies, to realize that people are not unaware of the destruction and devil against the environment” One of the participants said.

“This commemorating is a message about being united and cooperating to protect the environment and the natural world of Zagros Mountain series and the whole of Kurdistan” A female activist from east of Kurdistan said.

In that anniversary, all the environmental activists from Mariwan and other cities of east Kurdistan, laid flowers on the tombs of environmental activists, furthermore they promised to continue their path which is protecting Kurdistan’s environment.

Since the fire accident, both Bajwar and Kunaposhi were known the martyred for the environment by people in Mariwan, that tragic incident is celebrated annually nearby their tombs.

Religious preachers and scholars from the zone attended the ceremony, highlighted the necessity of getting together and keeping united to protect Kurdistan's environment.

A religious scholar in Mariwan, addressed his words to the attendees and environmental activists “Please no one, under any names and excuses, whether in the name of religion or for the world, should violate the environment, we are in 21st century.”

These two environmental activists were well-known for helping out people during natural disasters, for example during the catastrophic earthquake in Kermanshah province, they played significant roles. Therefore, a group of tambourines (musical instruments) players from Kermanshah province, who are Yarsan religion followers, participated in the ceremony and played tambourines, with original Kurdish music.
