Iraq imposes nationwide curfew for November census

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Supreme Population Council of Iraq on Sunday announced a nationwide curfew on November 20 and 21, as part of preparations for the upcoming population and housing census. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the meeting focused on finalizing the logistics for the census, with a particular emphasis on collaboration between various government ministries and agencies.
The curfew will be implemented across all Iraqi provinces to ensure a smooth and accurate counting process. In addition to the curfew, several other measures were approved, including:
- Finalizing coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for the training of statistical staff.
- Support from the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, and Youth and Sports in providing classrooms and youth centers for staff training.
- Expediting the transfer of financial resources necessary for census operations.
Prime Minister al-Sudani stressed the importance of national cooperation, urging all relevant bodies to work together for the successful execution of the census, which has been delayed multiple times in the past due to security and political challenges. The government also underscored the role of accurate data collection in shaping Iraq’s future development plans.
The upcoming census is seen as a crucial step in improving Iraq’s infrastructure planning and resource allocation.
