The Sandhurst Medal was introduced in 2016 to recognize the extraordinary achievement of those International Students who successfully complete the Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
The academy, founded in 1802, is a renowned British institution that has long served as a primary training center for officers in the British Army.
Located in Sandhurst, Berkshire, with its main entrance in Camberley, southwest of London, the academy has earned a reputation as a national center for leadership excellence.
It trains all British Army officers, including late-entry officers who were formerly non-commissioned, as well as men and women from overseas.
Sandhurst stands as the army equivalent of Britain’s Royal Naval College and Royal Air Force College Cranwell, with an intensive 44-week training program.
The academy prepares officer cadets for leadership roles within the British Army, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for military service.
Applicants to Sandhurst undergo rigorous assessments by senior officials before admission, and the competition is fierce.
Approximately 80% of Sandhurst’s students are university graduates, including international students. The college employs military trainers, with 10% female and 10% male officers.
Each year, one class of officer cadets graduates from Sandhurst, with a focus on selecting 30 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) from a pool of 60 officers.
Many of the academy’s graduates, particularly infantrymen, go on to pursue further studies, earning graduate degrees in leadership and education.
Upon graduation, they may also opt to continue their education by pursuing master’s degrees through elective courses and a thesis.
Areen Masrour Barzani’s promotion to lieutenant is a significant milestone, reflecting both his dedication to military excellence and the high standards of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
