ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – In an announcement by the Iraqi Federal Ministerial Economic Council on Monday, that came up as result of a detailed and intensive negotiating-meeting in Kurdistan Region, the aim was to support farmers and particularly, tomatoes growing in the region.

The Economic Council made a decision in the farmers’ welfare, by stopping any import of tomatoes, it was confirmed by the council the border gates are closed for that matter.

The order was approved, and such decision is to support Kurdish farmers in Kurdistan Region, and to revive the marketing for tomato growing.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, in a statement, showed the interest to the farmers’ favor.

“All the borders and gates will be closed at importing tomatoes from, outside Iraq, in its borders” the statement explained and local authorities valued such step as an important step to support the farmers in Kurdistan Region.

In the statement, it is highlighted that farmers’ crops in the following areas are ripe, Penjwin, Sydakan, Erbil and Duhok plains, but farmers experience the issue of consuming their product.

Also, another backup to the plan is following the step of border and gates closure, the products of the Kurdistan Region will be exported to the central and southern markets in Iraq," the statement said.
