ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Belgian municipal elections are set to take place on Sunday, with five Kurdish candidates from various parties running for seats in different municipalities across the country.
The Kurdistan24 correspondent Barzan Hassan reported that the candidates are seeking positions in a political environment that is known for its diversity and regional complexities.
The Kurdish candidates participating in the elections are:
1. Sayran Zawity, listed as No. 28 on the ballot for the CD&V Party.
2. Nask Nasiri, also No. 28, representing the NVA.
3. Karine Rashidova, No. 15, running with Team Burgemeester.
4. Roni Mazlum Deli, ranked No. 3 with the NVA.
5. Antonio Hanna, No. 19, standing for Voor Brugge.
The polling stations will open at 8:00 am local time on Sunday, allowing Belgian citizens to cast their votes.
Voting in Belgium is mandatory, emphasizing the importance placed on civic engagement in this distributive nation.
These elections are exclusively for the municipal councils, distinct from the European Parliament and Belgian Parliament elections held three months ago.
Belgium's political landscape is divided into three main regions: the Brussels region with 19 municipalities, the Flanders region encompassing 300 municipalities, and the Wallonia region with 262 municipalities.
As the candidates campaign for the opportunity to represent their communities, the presence of Kurdish nominees in the race highlights the diverse makeup of Belgium’s local political scene.
The outcome of these elections will shape municipal leadership and governance across the country’s varied regions.
