ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi security forces have uncovered a major drug manufacturing facility in Darbandikhan district in Sulaimani province, marking a significant operation in the ongoing fight against narcotics in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Miqdad Miri, spokesperson for the Iraqi Interior Ministry, confirmed the discovery to Kurdistan24 on Sunday. "We have received information about the existence of a drug factory in Darbandikhan. A joint working team was formed to investigate the issue," Miri stated.

The operation was carried out with the cooperation of the General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics and local security forces. The factory was seized, and several suspects were arrested during the raid. Miri emphasized the ministry's commitment to combating drug production and trafficking across Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, stating, "We will seize drug factories anywhere in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and arrest the suspects."

A report published in March by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime identified Sulaimani province as one of the main corridors for drug trafficking in Iraq, with the region serving as a primary route for the smuggling of heroin, opium, and methamphetamine.

Moreover, the Kurdistan Region Directorate General of Counter Terrorism on Oct. 10 announced that Iraqi security forces have uncovered a large drug manufacturing facility in the village of Awbari, located in the Maydan sub-district near Sulaimani’s Darbandikhan district.
