Iraq walks tightrope as militia strikes against Israel raise war risk

Iraq could face an uncertain future as some armed factions continue launching drone attacks against Israel despite the government's insistence that decisions of war remain solely within its jurisdiction.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The escalating Middle East conflict, marked by Israel's recent strike on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iraqi militias targeting Israel with drones, has placed Iraq in an increasingly precarious position, experts warn.

Iraq could face an uncertain future as some armed factions continue launching drone attacks against Israel despite the government's insistence that decisions of war remain solely within its jurisdiction.

This developing situation has raised serious concerns among regional observers about Iraq being drawn into a direct confrontation with Israel.

"Realistically, this presents a significant challenge for the Sudani government, particularly given that these factions operate with both military and political wings," Dr. Saif Al-Saadi, a political analyst, told Kurdistan24.

"The continued targeting of U.S. bases or participation in strikes against Israeli territories by these factions could have devastating consequences for Iraq's internal stability," he added.

Some specialists maintain a more optimistic outlook, arguing that militia compliance with government authority is mandatory and that the administration possesses the capability to assert control without entangling Iraq in the broader conflict.

Political observer Salah Boushi expressed to Kurdistan24 that "the actions of Iraqi armed factions reflect their political positions, and there are shared factors between the executive authority, armed factions, and political forces."

However, despite Prime Minister Sudani's declaration that decisions of peace and war rest with the government, recent events suggest otherwise.

According to experts, the ongoing drone attacks against Israel by certain armed factions directly contradict this assertion, highlighting the complex reality of Iraq's current security situation.
