Chaldean parties emphasize rights ahead of Iraq’s national census
In their Sunday statement, the Chaldean parties described the census as an important democratic milestone for Iraq, emphasizing its role in shaping decisions about the allocation of service budgets and reflecting the country’s demographic composition.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Chaldean Supreme Political Committee, representing the Chaldean Democratic Union Party, the Chaldean National Congress Party, and the Chaldean League, has issued a joint statement welcoming Iraq’s upcoming general population census while presenting key demands to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government.
In their Sunday statement, the Chaldean parties described the census as an important democratic milestone for Iraq, emphasizing its role in shaping decisions about the allocation of service budgets and reflecting the country’s demographic composition.
However, they cautioned that census results should not replace the implementation of constitutional provisions such as Articles 125 and 140 or misrepresent the demographic realities of historical Chaldean areas. The parties called for the 1957 census to serve as a reference point to protect the rights of their community.
Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, also urged Christians across Iraq to actively participate in the census. "This national process is very important, and I hope Christians will help the census takers record their personal information," he stated, highlighting the significance of the census, which Iraq has not conducted in 27 years.
The nationwide census, scheduled for Nov. 20 and 21, is expected to be a landmark event, providing comprehensive demographic data to guide future development policies in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
