Kurdistan Region President, UK Home Secretary discuss regional security and cooperation

The leaders emphasized the need for stronger collaboration in security and combating transnational issues such as organized crime, illegal migration, human trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime.

Erbil (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper on Wednesday to discuss enhancing ties between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the United Kingdom, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

The leaders emphasized the need for stronger collaboration in security and combating transnational issues such as organized crime, illegal migration, human trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime.  

President Nechirvan Barzani underscored the importance of international partnerships to address security challenges, humanitarian concerns, and global criminal activities. He commended the UK for its role in supporting regional stability and advancing the Kurdistan Region’s security and administrative capabilities.   

Home Secretary Cooper praised the successful completion of the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections and expressed gratitude for the region’s role as a strategic partner in ensuring regional security. She reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to working closely with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq to foster stability and address pressing humanitarian issues in the broader region.  

The meeting also explored key topics, including the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet, the necessity of implementing Iraq’s constitution, resolving domestic political challenges, countering the ongoing threat of ISIS, and recent developments in the Middle East.  

Both sides reiterated their dedication to strengthening bilateral relations and working together on issues of shared concern.
