ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The first semester exams for prisoners across the Kurdistan Region commenced on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the region's commitment to education and rehabilitation.

Khaleed Mohammed, Director of the Kurdistan Region General Directorate of Prisons, told Kurdistan24 that the exams are being held in all six prisons, which house adults, women, and children.

"A total of 504 prisoners are participating in the exams," Mohammed stated. "Among them, 375 are primary school students, while 129 are enrolled in high school programs."

Mohammed highlighted the availability of educational resources within the prison system, including dedicated schools and private teachers.

"Every year, many prisoners return to school and pursue their studies, with some continuing their education to the point of obtaining a master's degree," he said.

According to official prison figures, there are currently 5,700 inmates across the Kurdistan Region. Social researchers and prison authorities actively encourage inmates to engage in educational activities and participate in study programs, fostering personal growth and rehabilitation.

The initiative underscores the importance of education as a means of reform and reintegration, providing prisoners with valuable skills and opportunities for the future.
