ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has emphasized the urgency of resuming oil production in the Kurdistan Region and restarting exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
He underscored the necessity of moving forward with joint economic agreements, particularly following the recent amendments to the Federal Budget Law passed by the Iraqi Parliament.
Al-Sudani Stresses Economic Cooperation
In a statement released on Saturday, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Al-Sudani met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to discuss key national issues.
The discussions focused on economic cooperation, energy policies, and the implementation of the federal government’s agenda across various sectors.
Urgent Need for Oil Exports Through Ceyhan
During the meeting, Al-Sudani stressed that restarting Kurdistan’s oil exports is a national priority, noting that its suspension has impacted Iraq’s overall economy.
He called on oil companies in the Kurdistan Region to immediately resume production and facilitate exports through Ceyhan port, ensuring economic stability and fulfilling Iraq’s financial obligations.
President Barzani Reaffirms Commitment to Coordination
For his part, President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) commitment to working closely with Baghdad.
He highlighted the importance of maintaining coordination between the two governments in economic, financial, and service-related matters, which he said is essential for long-term stability and development.
Impact of Oil Export Suspension on Iraq’s Economy
Kurdistan’s oil exports have been halted since March 2023, following legal and political disputes between Baghdad, Erbil, and Ankara.
The prolonged suspension has placed significant financial strain on both the regional and federal economies. The renewed dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil is seen as a crucial step toward resolving longstanding disputes and restoring the country's vital energy sector operations.
