ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Sunday, led by Hiroshi Suzuki, the head of JICA’s Iraq office, to discuss expanding cooperation, particularly in education.

Both sides explored ways to enhance collaboration, with a strong emphasis on leveraging Japan’s advanced education system to benefit the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani underscored the importance of adopting elements of Japan’s disciplined and innovative educational model to foster a new generation that is responsible, productive, and respectful of societal values, parents, teachers, and the environment.

The JICA delegation presented Japan’s education system as a successful model currently being implemented in several schools in Egypt. Professor Sugita, the supervisor of JICA’s educational project in Egypt, provided insights into the Japanese experience in reforming education and its potential applicability in the Kurdistan Region.

JICA officials welcomed Prime Minister Barzani’s proposal and expressed their readiness to provide full support and cooperation to develop Kurdistan’s education sector.

JICA has been actively engaged in development projects across various sectors in Iraq, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Japan’s education system is globally recognized for its discipline, innovation, and strong emphasis on character-building, values that align with the Kurdistan Region’s vision for educational reform.

By strengthening ties with JICA, the Kurdistan Regional Government aims to modernize its educational framework and equip future generations with the skills necessary to contribute effectively to society.
