ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Israel has reportedly urged Washington to pressure Turkey into curbing its influence in Syria, fearing that "Ankara-backed authorities" in Damascus could facilitate the emergence of hostile organizations such as Hamas.

Israeli Concerns Over Syria’s New Leadership

According to Israel Hayom newspaper, Israeli officials have expressed deep concerns regarding Syria’s new leadership, which has received support from Turkey. They believe this development could pose a security threat to Israel’s borders.

“With the deterioration of Israeli-Turkish relations due to the war in Gaza, Israel is increasingly worried about Ankara’s growing influence over Syria’s Islamist leadership."

Israeli Pressure on Washington

Israel is reportedly lobbying the United States to maintain Syria in a state of weakness and fragmentation. According to Israel Hayom, this push is part of a broader diplomatic effort by Israel to shape U.S. policy at a crucial juncture for Syria. The country’s new leadership, which replaced Bashar al-Assad’s regime, is seeking international recognition and relief from sanctions, a move Israel views with concern.

Fears of a Safe Haven for Armed Groups

Aaron Lund, a researcher at Century International, stated that Israel’s primary concern is that Turkey may step in to shield Syria’s new leadership, potentially turning the country into a stronghold for Hamas and other armed factions.

In a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed on Sunday that Israel “will not tolerate the presence of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or any other force affiliated with the new government in southern Syria.” He emphasized Israel’s demand for a complete demilitarization of the region.
