Iraq Warns Against Sectarian Incitement, Vows Legal Action and Deportation

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Iraqi Ministry of Interior issued a strong warning on Wednesday, emphasizing that Iraq respects its Syrian residents and expects full compliance with its laws and traditions and track down those involved in violent assaults.
The ministry underscored that security and intelligence agencies have detected cases of unlawful sectarian incitement by certain individuals residing in Iraq, stressing that such actions are entirely unacceptable.
In its statement, the ministry warned that any violations of Iraqi laws would lead to legal accountability, with strict measures—including deportation—for those spreading inflammatory content that disrupts social harmony.
"Anyone attempting to stir sectarian strife will face a firm response in accordance with the law," the statement affirmed, reiterating that Iraq is a country of generosity and hospitality that welcomes those who respect its laws and the values of its people.
Iraqi Prime Minister Orders Crackdown on Perpetrators of Attacks
In response to growing concerns, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani ordered a security operation to track down those involved in violent assaults against Syrian workers in Iraq.
A statement released by the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Numan, detailed that a video circulating on social media showed masked individuals, reportedly belonging to a faction calling itself "Ya Ali Popular Formations," engaging in acts of violence against Syrian laborers.
"Upon immediate review, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a specialized security team to pursue those responsible for these unlawful actions, which have no connection to the ethics or traditions of the Iraqi people," the statement read.
The government condemned these attacks as criminal acts in violation of both Iraqi law and fundamental human rights. "These assaults are legally condemned offenses that contradict all human and moral values, as well as the principles of human dignity and rights," the statement emphasized.
Syrian Foreign Ministry Condemns Attacks on Syrians in Iraq
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the reported attacks on Syrian nationals in Iraq, denouncing them as violations of human rights and international law. In a statement published on its official website on Wednesday, the ministry reaffirmed its unwavering support for Syrian citizens abroad and urged the Iraqi government to take decisive action against those responsible for the assaults.
"We call upon the esteemed Iraqi government to ensure justice by holding the perpetrators accountable and implementing all necessary measures to safeguard the security and well-being of Syrians residing in Iraq," the statement read.
The ministry further confirmed that it is actively coordinating with Iraqi authorities to address these violations, calling for swift and effective steps to prevent further incidents. Expressing confidence in Iraq’s ability to uphold the rule of law, the Syrian Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of protecting all communities within Iraq’s borders.
