ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Newroz celebrations have officially commenced in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat), with thousands gathering in the village of Deryaz, near Mahabad, to welcome the Kurdish New Year with traditional music, dance, and fire lighting.
The festivities, which begin 25 days before Newroz, take place across various cities and towns in the region. This year, a large-scale carnival is being held in Deryaz, an ancient village located 10 kilometers from Mahabad. The event features vibrant performances of Kurdish songs and dances, with participants dressed in traditional Kurdish attire.
This marks the second major Newroz celebration in the area, following a similar event in the village of Gug Tappeh in Mahabad. The ceremonies have attracted significant participation from local communities and artists.
Mikail Ghazali, a resident of Mahabad, emphasized the cultural significance of this year’s celebration, stating, “In honor of the Kurdish year 2725, we will celebrate Newroz in Kurdish clothing, with traditional songs and music, joined by many Kurdish citizens.”
Mohammed Wazi, a resident of Sarchnar village, shared his enthusiasm for the event, saying, “I came to Deryaz to celebrate Newroz because the celebrations here are very special. Men, women, youth, and children all take part in their beautiful Kurdish attire.”
Newroz festivities have been a longstanding tradition in Iranian Kurdistan, organized by civil organizations and Mahabad's literary and environmental councils. Several renowned artists from the Mukriyan region have volunteered to perform at the event, adding to its cultural richness.
The celebrations are set to continue for 25 days, starting on February 5 in the Hawraman area and spreading across several cities and regions until the official Newroz night. Each day, different locations in Kurdistan will host ceremonies, reinforcing the deep-rooted cultural and national significance of Newroz in the region.
