ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani arrived in Baghdad on Friday for an unannounced official visit, marking a significant step in diplomatic engagement between Syria and Iraq.

Al-Shaibani is scheduled to meet with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. The two ministers will also hold a joint press conference following their meeting.

His visit follows remarks made at the World Government Summit in the UAE, where al-Shaibani confirmed receiving an official invitation from Iraq and expressed his commitment to strengthening ties with neighboring countries.

This visit marks the first by a high-ranking Syrian official to Iraq since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, highlighting renewed efforts to reestablish diplomatic relations.

In a related development, an Iraqi delegation led by Hamid al-Shatri, head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS), visited Damascus on December 26, 2024, for talks with Ahmed al-Sharaa, president of Syria’s transitional government. So far, al-Shatri remains the only senior Iraqi official to have visited Syria.

The meeting in Baghdad is expected to set the stage for further diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
