Kurdistan Gears Up for Newroz and Ramadan Festivities with Comprehensive Tourism Preparations

A major attraction for Newroz remains the traditional fire celebrations held across various cities and towns in the region, drawing a significant number of international visitors, especially in Akre town, widely known as the capital of Newroz festivities.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – As the Kurdistan Region prepares for both Newroz and the Eid al-Fitr holiday, authorities have launched extensive measures to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors across cities and autonomous administrations.

According to Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region’s Tourism Board, preparations are being carried out simultaneously for Newroz and Ramadan, given that the two occasions are just eight days apart this year. "We have coordinated with our general directorates in multiple provinces and autonomous administrations to ensure a welcoming atmosphere for tourists, providing them with the best possible experience in Kurdistan," he told Kurdistan24 on Tuesday.

Impact of Ramadan on Domestic and International Tourism

Abdulmajid noted that the overlap of Newroz with Ramadan has affected the influx of domestic tourists, especially from southern and central Iraq, where the majority of people observe fasting. “This year, we have seen a noticeable decline in visitors from southern and central Iraq, as many prefer to stay home during Ramadan,” he explained. However, he reassured that international tourism remains unaffected, particularly from European countries, with foreign visitors continuing to travel to Kurdistan.

Ramadan and Tourism Management Plans

For the Eid holiday, officials anticipate a resurgence of visitors who postponed their trips due to fasting. To manage the expected influx, various committees have been established, particularly at border crossings, where tourism and security authorities are working together to facilitate seamless entry for visitors and show the beautiful face of Kurdistan.

Additionally, local market supervision teams will monitor pricing and product quality, while all tourist facilities will remain fully operational. Dedicated information centers are also being set up in key locations to assist tourists, and hotlines have been established in all provinces and autonomous administrations for any inquiries or assistance.

Abdulmajid reaffirmed that while the number of "tourists" may temporarily decline during Ramadan, the number of "sightseers" is expected to increase, as the season is more suitable for local leisure travel rather than long-distance tourism.

With these preparations in place, Kurdistan aims to showcase its hospitality, scenic landscapes, and vibrant cultural celebrations, making the region an attractive destination for both Newroz and Eid visitors.
