ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has issued a stark warning, stating that failure to reach a new agreement with Iran over its nuclear program could lead to military conflict in the region.

Speaking before the French Parliament on Wednesday, Barrot emphasized the urgency of renewed negotiations, saying, "There is still an opportunity to reach a new deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program, but if no agreement is made, war will become inevitable."

The statement reflects growing concerns in Paris over the deteriorating security situation and Iran’s continued uranium enrichment activities, which Western powers fear could bring Tehran closer to developing nuclear weapons.

France’s Diplomatic Push Amid Rising Tensions

Barrot stressed that time is running out, reminding lawmakers that the 2015 nuclear agreement is approaching its expiration. He reiterated that diplomatic efforts must be intensified to prevent a dangerous escalation in the region.

His remarks come as European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, hold high-level discussions on how to contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions and maintain regional stability. Reports indicate that Macron has met with key officials and experts to assess the growing tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Iran and European Sanctions

Barrot also linked the issue of new European Union sanctions on Iran to the country’s detention of foreign nationals. He pointed out that upcoming EU measures would target Tehran over the imprisonment of foreign citizens, including several European nationals.

His remarks align with recent moves by European powers to hold Iran accountable for human rights violations, particularly concerning the detention of foreign individuals. The French government has repeatedly called for the release of these detainees and has signaled that Tehran’s handling of the issue could impact future diplomatic engagements.

Upcoming Diplomatic Meetings

Adding to the urgency of the situation, according to Anadolu agency (AA) Israeli Foreign Minister will visit Paris on Thursday, to discuss Iran’s nuclear program with counterparts from France, the UK, and Germany. The meeting is also expected to include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, signaling a coordinated Western response to Iran’s nuclear activities.

With tensions mounting, observer says that France is positioning itself as a key player in diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program and prevent further destabilization in the region. However, as Barrot warned, the window for a peaceful resolution is closing fast, and the risk of military conflict looms over the Middle East.
