Iraq's Cabinet Sets November 11, 2025, as Date for Parliamentary Elections
According to IHEC, nearly 28 million eligible voters are expected to participate in the 2025 parliamentary elections, with millions of young voters, born in 2007, casting their votes for the first time.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq’s Council of Ministers, with a majority vote, has officially set the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections. On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the office of the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, announced that the parliamentary elections will be held on November 11, 2025.
The Spokesperson of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Jumana Ghalay, told Kurdistan24 on Wednesday that the commission confirmed its readiness to conduct the parliamentary elections on the date selected by the Cabinet. Ghalay emphasized that preparations for the elections are proceeding smoothly and are under the guidelines set by the Council of Ministers.
This decision comes after a series of political negotiations and discussions. On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, a coalition of Shiite groups called for the elections to take place in October of this year, urging the government to adhere to the timeline outlined for the election process.
The coordination framework of Shiite factions also affirmed that no political party should alter the date for the elections or attempt to delay the process. The coalition further called on the government to ensure security measures are in place and provide full support for the Independent Electoral Commission to guarantee the success of the election process.
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Sadr Movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr, in a statement, referred to the parliamentary elections as insignificant and largely driven by sectarian and partisan interests. He announced that his faction would not be participating in the elections.
According to IHEC, nearly 28 million eligible voters are expected to participate in the 2025 parliamentary elections, with millions of young voters, born in 2007, casting their votes for the first time.
As preparations for the elections continue, all eyes will be on Iraq's political leaders and the electoral commission to ensure a smooth and transparent voting process.
